wftv.com, Channel 9, U.S. Theme Park First: Legoland Florida runs completely on renewable energy for Earth Day
Legoland Florida and Tampa Electric celebrated Earth Day by working together to run Legoland on renewable energy for the day. Legoland Florida became the first theme park in the United States to run completely on renewable energy and the effort was part of a greater program designed to educate park visitors about solar energy
- As part of the partnership between Tampa Electric and Legoland Florida a 30 kilowatt solar panel array was placed in the Imagination Zone at Legoland.
- The Imagination Zone section of Legoland Florida will continue to be permanently powered by renewable energy.
- The environmental savings for the day equaled the removal of three cars from the road for one year or the planting of six acres of trees.
- Beginning in June visitors will find interactive exhibits and models at the park, including Lego mini-model communities that are running on solar energy.
- Legoland Florida has a history of conservation efforts. In 2013 they recycled almost 60 tons of cans and bottles and 176 tons of cardboard.
